YESTERDAY I WENT TO THE 6TH PRECINCT IN DETROIT ON WARWICK AND PLYMOUTH TO REGISTER MY GUN. I WALKED IN THE DOOR AND NO ONE ACKNOWLEDGED ME. I WALKED THE COUNTER AND THEY NEVER LOOKED UP. I SAW A BOOK SIGNED MY NAME AND SAT DOWN.
I MADE A FEW OBSERVATIONS AS I SAT SOME YOU JUST HEARD ABOVE. BUT, WHAT I NOTICED IS THAT HERE ARE THREE OFFICERS AT A COMPUTER DOING SOMETHING BUT I CLEARLY DO NOT THINK IT WAS THE BUSINESS AT HAND NOR DO I THINK IT WAS NECESSARY FOR ALL THREE OFFICERS TO BE INVOLVED AT THAT MOMENT. NOW, THERE ARE TWO OTHER PEOPLE WAITING ONE IS BEING ASSISTED AND PERHAPS THE TWO THAT WERE WAITING HAD ALREADY BEEN CARED FOR I WAS NOT SURE AND WAS ONLY CONCERNED ABOUT ME AT THE TIME. ONE OF THE OFFICERS STEPS AWAY FROM THE OTHER TWO AND SITS DOWN AND HAS CONVERSATION WITH THE OFFICER THAT IS ASSISTING SOMEONE. THE OTHER STAYS AT THE TERMINAL AND AFTER A 10-12 MINUTE WAIT HE CALLS MY NAME.
I WALK UP TO THE DESK AND HE ASK WHAT I AM TRYING TO DO, I TELL HIM JUST DROP OFF THIS FORM HE SAYS YOU ARE IN THE WRONG PRECINCT. HE TELLS ME WHERE I NEED TO GO, THANK YOU. I GET HOME AND I HAVE THIS CONVERSATION WITH MYSELF. SIR, I HAVE WORKED FOR THE TELEPHONE COMPANY FOR 35 YEARS AND ONE THING I GET IS CUSTOMER SERVICE. IF YOU HAD OF ACKNOWLEDGE ME WHEN I WALKED IN THE DOOR. HI HOW CAN I HELP YOU? I WOULD HAVE SAID I AM JUST DROPPING OFF THIS FORM YOU WOULD HAVE IMMEDIATELY REPLIED YOU ARE IN THE WRONG PLACE AND I WOULD HAVE BEEN ON MY WAY.
WELL, ONE HOUR LATER I HEAR THAT SOMEONE WALKS INTO THAT SAME POLICE STATION AND SHOOTS FOUR OFFICERS, NOW I AM PRAYING THAT THEY RECOVER. I AM PRAYING THAT THE DPD TAKES MEASURES THAT WILL KEEP OUR FINE OFFICERS WHO PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE FOR US DAILY SAFE. AGAIN I BELIEVE THAT THE MAN WHO WALKED IN WITH THE GUN PROBABLY WAS NOT ACKNOWLEDGE NO ONE LOOKED UP AT HIM TO SEE HIS DEMEANOR OR TO SAY HOW CAN I HELP YOU? (MAYBE THEY WOULD HAVE NOTICED SOMETHING IN HIS FACE) I THINK IT IS TIME TO GIVE THE OFFICERS SOME TRAINING IN CUSTOMER SERVICE. YOU ARE A PUBLIC SERVANT AND YOU SHOULD BE AWARE OF YOUR PUBLIC. THE IGNORANT MAN THAT CAME IN THERE TO HARM THE OFFICERS HAD A PROBLEM......BUT I DID NOT.

It is a blessing that you were not there when the shooting occurred. To your point, after viewing the video of the shooting, that gunman was able to walk all the way up to the side of the counter unchallenged. Even though the shotgun was not visible, if the officers had been focused on the business at hand - to serve and protect, that incident would probably have still occurred but the outcome would have been less severe. It is a lesson for us all to be focused on the business at hand - and not allow ourselves to be distracted with unimportant issues.
This should be reported to the police department. If they had been more alert they may have noticed the gunman earlier
